Kindergarten students learning about primary and secondary colours |
IHMS had a school wide “Science Day” on Friday, April 11th where students participated in hands-on science activities. Each class, from Kindergarten to grade 8 took part in an activity related to their respective grade’s science curriculum.
Kindergarten
The Kindergarten class mixed primary colours to produce secondary colours.
Grade 1
The grade 1 students created beaver habitats as part of their unit on Living Things. This science project is a work in progress and will take about a week to complete.
This is a work in progress!
Grade 2
The grade 2 students had a guest from the University of Manitoba present a “Let’s Talk Science” workshop. Students learned about germs, proper hand-washing etiquette and the ‘secret’ sneeze. Two stories about germs were read to the grade 2’s. The activity involved sprinkling fluorescent powder on the student’s hands to simulate germs and then observing the amount of fluorescence under UV light to evaluate their hand-washing skills.
Grade 3
The grade 3 students learned about polymers. The “Let’s Talk Science” group did a presentation to the class last month entitled “Slimy Surprise/Magic Mud”. On Science Day, the grade 3 class watched a video on magnetism and did an activity on forces.
Grade 4
The grade 4 students investigated, tested, and compared the physical properties of rocks and minerals.
Grade 5
The grade 5 students had a guest from the University of Manitoba present two different “Let’s Talk Science” workshops. In the first workshop, students learned the particle theory of chemistry using milk, food coloring, and detergent. In the second workshop, students learned about different types of chemical reactions, enzymes and catalysts.
Grade 6
In grade 6 the students made and tested electromagnets.
Grade 7
The grade 7 students had a guest from the University of Manitoba present a “Let’s Talk Science” workshop. Students formed teams to see which team could design and build the strongest spaghetti bridge using inexpensive materials, while harnessing their creativity, logic and problem-solving skills! Aspects of bridge building (strength, material, etc) were explored.
Grade 8
The grade 8 students determined the density of a number of different objects.
