| Catholic schools are unique communities with different personal and cultural values than the corresponding communities found in public schools. |  |
To celebrate the uniqueness of our schools, Catholic Schools Week has become an annual event that builds an appreciation of the educational achievements and spiritual benefits of attending a Catholic school. It acknowledges the many teachers and students who work in these schools, and celebrates the opportunities that Catholic Schools have to offer.

The celebrations began on Monday morning for the grade 5 and 6 students. They boarded a chartered bus at 9:00 a.m. to go on a field trip to the Petrus Centre to listen to a Spirit Day inspirational speaker. The grade 7 and 8 students did the same thing that afternoon.
The afternoon was Movie Monday! While the junior-high students were attending their Spirit Day, the K-6 students watched a movie in the gym. The movie was kept a secret until the students showed up to watch it.

Tuesday February 11 was “Twisted Tuesday” for one period in the morning – from 9:35 to first recess at 10:15. During this time, every IHMS staff member did something completely different – they switched jobs with another staff member.

A “Winter Carnival” with some outdoor activities was planned for the Wednesday afternoon of Catholic Schools Week. These games were a set of 10 team-based activities with half the activities taking place indoors, and the other half taking place outdoors in the playground. Every student was assigned to a specific team with a specific team colour.
Unfortunately, the weather on Wednesday, February 12th was extremely cold, so the “Winter Carnival” was postponed to Friday, February 21.

Thursday, February 13 was a NUT Day. Students wore red or pink to celebrate Valentine’s day, which was the next day.

Since the next day was Valentines’s day and a day off for the students, some students also exchanged their own Valentine’s day cards, especially in the younger grades. IHMS is trying to promote healthier eating in the school, so passing out candies or chocolates was prohibited.

Friday, February 14, the last day of Catholic Schools Week, was an inservice day for the teachers at St. Mary’s Academy. While IHMS teachers (and teachers from other Catholic schools) were busy attending the inservice, students had a day off from school. Since the following Monday was a holiday – Louis Riel Day – it was a long 4 day weekend for the students and a great way to finish off a fun and exciting week!
