For the 2017-18 school year, IHMS received a grant from the Manitoba Arts Council to fund a very unique “Artists in the Schools” program – Japanese drumming.

This year’s “Artists in the Schools” program was facilitated by Fubuki Daiko, a local Japanese drumming group who have been bringing the art of taiko (Japanese drumming) to schools throughout Manitoba for over 20 years.

Students and staff of IHMS were first introduced to Fubuki Daiko on Monday, October 2 when the group performed their Japanese drumming act in the school gym. The performance, which lasted for about an hour, was loud, rhythmic, and fun to watch. Students not only loved the music, but they also enjoyed Fubuki Daiko’s showmanship on the drums.

After Monday’s performance, and on each day for the rest of the week (until Thursday – it was a short work for students), every grade at IHMS received lessons on basic drumming by Fubuki Daiko. The lessons took place at the parish hall next to Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral on McGregor Street. During these lessons, every grade learned a different drumming song based on their age and ability.

Finally, on Tuesday, October 10, one week after their initial introduction to Japanese drumming and after only 3 lessons from Fubuki Daiko, the entire school gathered in the gym at 2:00 for a performance by the students. Each class, from grade 1 to grade 8, took turns pounding out their unique rhythmic beat on the drums (and demonstrating some showmanship in the process) to the delight and amusement of everyone assembled in the gym.

Students, teachers, and a few parents assembled in the gym on Tuesday, October 10th to watch the Japanese drumming performance of each of the classes from grade 1 to grade 8
